Team Tips: Stay Safe this Winter!
How to Stay Safe This Winter!
Our home base of Hood River, OR is experiencing one of the snowiest winters in recent memory and we are loving it! As the stoke is high for backcountry skiing and snowboarding, it's the perfect time to remind ourselves of the importance of traveling safely out there and how to stay safe this winter.
We turned to team athlete Jessie Kilgour to share her knowledge. Jessie shreds all year, spending winters as a Ski Patroller in British Columbia, and this woman knows her stuff about snow safety. Read on for her tips on staying safe in the backcountry, and a link to a video she highly recommends!
The excitement of winter starting, fresh snow falling, and the thought of the first few turns of the season make it easy to forget the dangers that can exist in the beautiful snow covered mountains. This video is a great reminder to be aware of your surroundings and understand the hazards of the back country. If you are already educated about the back country, remember to stay informed of current conditions, and practice using your avalanche rescue gear. If you’re new to the mountains, get educated. It’s not enough to just go with people who know what they’re doing, you need the skills too.
For everyone, please remember that going out of bounds of a ski resort, even just a few turns, puts you into terrain that may be very hazardous because it hasn't been made safe through avalanche control. As a ski patroller, I have seen the tragic outcomes that can result from stepping out of bounds uninformed and uneducated… please don’t make that mistake. Stay safe and keep enjoying the snow!
