What is the mission of Save the Mermaids? The Mermaids act as ambassadors to the sea by educating our community about human-sourced ocean pollution and advocating for behaviors that benefit the ocean environment. We are a group of friends that believe in the magic of the ocean. As plastic toxicity is wreaking havoc on our ocean ecosystems we decided to take action in raising awareness and providing solutions for the future. Our goal is to educate the public in a fun and creative way on how our actions affect the ocean environment as well as teaching lifestyle habits to prevent further harm and benefit the health of the sea. We are continuously learning about issues affecting our world and how we can make changes as individuals to ensure that our world is forever blue, green, beautiful, and clean. How do you further that mission? We hold weekly beach cleanups, school presentations, awareness events, workshops, and education programs! Save the Mermaids has partnered with many local groups in town to help bring students out onto the ocean or into the ocean education environments. Through “hands-on” experiences we strive to educate and excite students about our coastal waters and make them feel responsible to create the change that will directly affect the ocean's health. Throughout the years our Education Programs have expanded from single-use plastic to include marine wildlife, marine ecology ocean health, beach erosion, water quality, watersheds, sustainable farming, all natural eco friendly home and body products and more! Our education programs help youth feel more engaged, knowledgeable and confident with their ocean environment. We have spread ocean love to over 5000 children in the last few years through school presentations, events clean-ups, education programs, camps, after-school programs, and more. The Mermaids were instrumental in the banning of plastic bags in the city of Santa Barbara. Save the Mermaids joined with the CEC, Channel Keeper, and Surfrider to tirelessly fight for banning single-use plastic bags in the city and county of SB. And we succeeded!
What is your favorite surfing/SUP spot?
I love Santa Barbara. We are so lucky to have access locally to such a beautiful coastline. It is unbelievable. Last fall during our after school programs we were surrounded by dolphins weekly. From glassy to crashing waves, this is the place I love to be. photo-22
Favorite Sensi bikini? Oh what a hard question! I love the Dawn top and Lindsey bottoms, bright colors are always the best so pink and blue ikat I think are gorgeous!
